PB CHOICE: Catherine Zeta Jones

PLACE OF BIRTH/CURRENT RESIDENCE: Born – Palazzo de Zabini, Italy / Resides – “Widow’s Peak” Manor, Somerset, England
FAMILY MEMBERS: Son – Blaise Zabini
OWL AND/OR PETS: None
WAND: Mahogany, Veela hair core, 13 inches

PATRONUS: A huge, eerily graceful spider, large like an Acromantula but with the slender shape of a black widow
BOGGART: Her first husband, risen from the dead
MIRROR OF ERISED: Herself with Blaise at her father’s grave in Italy, sometimes with her father standing next to them.

SEXUALITY: Isabella is an omnivore, and considers sexuality to be a fluid thing. Most of her experiences have admittedly been with men, as it is the societal norm, but she is perfectly happy to have the occasional dalliance with a member of the fairer sex.
APPEARANCE: Isabella is her father’s daughter and has inherited the typical Zabini colouring. She stands at 5’9” and has a classically beautiful figure. Her hair is a raven black and very thick, falling down her back in heavy waves, and she has the distinctive slanted green eyes that are the heritage of all Zabinis.

HISTORY:
Isabella, like all Zabini children, was born on the grounds of the Palazzo de Zabini in Italy. Unlike most Zabini children, her birth was not attended by all members of the family and celebrated as a joyous addition to the Clan. Instead, it was kept quiet and those who knew of it were sworn to secrecy or done away with. Isabella, unlike most Zabini children, was not the child of her father’s wife, but rather that of one of his many mistresses. Her father, Alexandros Pietro Zabini, was the patriarch of their powerful clan, one of the most powerful Wizards in all of Europe, and like most Purebloods considered family and blood to be more important than anything else. When he learned that his halfblood mistress had become pregnant with his child, he was torn. The scandal of having a child out of wedlock would be monumental, and could lead to innumerable problems within the family core. Yet, this was his child, his blood. He could not ignore this.

Finally, after many months of anguishing over the decision, Lord Zabini came to a conclusion. He spoke to his wife and made a compromise with her. Upon Isabella’s birth, the baby was taken in by the Zabini family, and the mistress mysteriously disappeared, never to be heard from again. Alexandros and his wife formally acknowledged the child as a member of their family, granting her all the rights and privileges of a Pureblood child of their House, though the Acknowledgement Ceremony was unusually sedate and private. Then, as soon as Isabella was old enough to be taken from her wet-nurse, she was given to Alexandros’ barren sister, Pandora, and they were both sent into exile to Britain. Pandora was told that as long as Isabella remained in her care they were never to return to Italy. They would both be provided for and want for nothing, but Isabella must not be raised a proper child of Zabini, must not be a contender for the Zabini throne when Alexandros died.

So it was that Isabella grew up far from her native home, raised in Somerset by her maiden aunt. Pandora was a doting caretaker and grew to consider Isabella as her own child, and Isabella in turn loved her as a mother, but Isabella was always left with the knowledge that her father didn’t want her. To be sure, Lord Zabini kept his word and provided for the two of them. A manor house was built in Somerset for them, and a trust fund was set up in Gringott’s bank that was steadily replenished from the Zabini fortune, so that they could live as lavish a lifestyle as those back in Italy. Gifts and cards arrived for every holiday, written declarations of a father’s love, but never a spoken word or visit.

Isabella was enrolled in Hogwarts and sorted into House Slytherin, and there she quickly began to establish a reputation as a wily and passionate girl who ought not to be crossed. After only a few years she became one of most popular girls in the school, having her pick of whatever she might want, be it clothing or candy or boys. She enjoyed the power she wielded over everyone, but she was always concerned that her mysterious background would haunt her among the powerful Pureblood circles. This prompted her to take great cares to conceal her status as an exile from everyone.

In her seventh year she began seeing Thomas Locklore, a Ravenclaw. Thomas was one of the few people who was never impressed with Isabella’s talent for manipulation, and as such she found herself drawn to him. He was aloof and cold much of the time, driving Isabella to pursue him all the more. They were married shortly after graduating from Hogwarts, and for a time it seemed as though she had found happiness. Thomas, however, soon began to reveal himself as a cruel, aggressive man who liked control even more than she did. Their marriage turned sour, and Isabella found herself for the first time under the power of someone who did not care for her. He abused her, and she kept it a secret for fear that people would talk of how far Isabella Zabini had fallen to allow someone to treat her so. As their life together became increasingly terrible for her, she felt her composure and rationality slipping away from her, and one night she became so overwrought that she lashed back. It was surprisingly easy to switch the labels on Thomas’s potions supplies, and when Thomas went to make a soothing draught the next morning the subsequent explosion in his lab was enough to decimate half of their house. It was a miracle that Isabella had been in the garden at the time, and had thus escaped the destruction.

The investigation determined that a horrible accident had occurred, and Isabella inherited the entire Locklore estate. She was surprised at how simple it had been to regain the control she had craved, how easy arranging Thomas’s death had been. After a horrible two years chained to a man who had turned out to be a monster, she was free to do as she pleased again. She decided then to muster her courage and take a trip to Italy, despite the protests of Aunt Pandora, now aged and frail.

Isabella was received rather awkwardly by the Family in Italy. Now that she was of age she had the right to come and go as she pleased and Alexandros was unwilling to deny her this, but everyone whispered of the scandal surrounding her birth. She quickly saw what Pandora had always tried to tell her – that she could never be seen as an equal by the Core Family. Her half-brothers and sisters would smile and nod at her in public, but she could feel their cold stares on her back whenever it was turned. The last remaining hopes she held of being accepted by the Family were dashed, and after she felt that she’d made them feel awkward long enough she left Italy, beginning what would become her regular trips around Europe.

As life went on, Isabella married again and found that, after a year or two, marriage had once again become a trap. And it was so easy to cause another convenient accident, to make sure that she had the ability to once again leave. After that came another husband, and then another. Each time got even easier, as though this was how things were meant to work, and her fortune continued to grow as her name got longer. As the first war of Voldemort began she actively avoided the political situation in Britain, disdaining the fanatical beliefs of both sides. While she completely agreed with the Death Eaters’ contention that Pureblood tradition and culture was being eroded away by the Mudblood presence, she did not agree that the solution was to simply eradicate them all and make a big war of it all. She’d always held to the Grindelwaldean belief of exerting subtle control over the Muggle population, and keeping the Mudbloods in their place so as to ensure the prosperity of those who had worked hard for it. This would be a viewpoint that she would adopt again when Voldemort returned.

It was in her fourth marriage to a Pureblood Egyptian that she discovered she had become pregnant. Unsure of how to handle the pregnancy, the first thing she did was to ensure that her husband would have no claim over the child, whatever her decision might be. After his tragic death at the hands of a roaming blood cult, she went to his family and procured written testimony of his blood purity, as a way to protect her coming child. When Blaise was born she decided that the child would be hers like no one else had ever belonged solely to her. At this point Aunt Pandora had finally passed on, and Mother and son were alone together in the world. Isabella spent the first seven years of Blaise’s life unmarried, devoting all her time to raising her son and ensuring his devotion to her and her alone.

She married several more times after she’d decided Blaise was old enough to understand, and each time she became a little more ruthless, a little colder. As ever she kept her public face that of the wealthy socialite, never allowing anyone to get close enough to see beneath the facade. All her warmth was reserved for Blaise alone.

When the war broke out again, she maintained her stance as a neutral party, always allowing either side to believe what was most convenient for it. The Death Eaters assumed that she, as a wealthy Pureblooded lady of status, supported their regime against the Muggles. While the Death Eaters held the power, this proved useful. As soon as the tides of war changed, Isabella made several strategic donations to various charities, swinging her vast fortune and influence about to show everyone just how much the Zabinis did not in fact support Voldemort, that they had always kept their own mind about things. This allowed her to advance their status to one of the most powerful families in all of Wizarding Britain, though as the years went by this power grew less and less meaningful due to the erosion of tradition.

The changes in government and power proved to be less than beneficial to Isabella. More and more it seemed that the old ways were being discarded and forgotten, the hard-learned lessons of the past ignored so that some bleeding-hearts could feel good about allowing Mudbloods to rise above their place. All the work that she had done for her entire life to maintain her status as a lady of society was being swept away, and this could not be condoned. So when it became obvious that things were going to continue to deteriorate until someone took the reins, she decided that she would pre-empt another fanatic like Voldemort coming into power and instead steer the direction of fate herself.

Quietly, with the aid of her son, she began to seek out those who, like her, were discontent with the new way of things. Many lamented the loss of their culture, not only once-wealthy Purebloods, but even many Halfbloods who recognized the dangers of allowing the Mudbloods free reign over everything. Careful to conceal her involvement from all but a few specially selected individuals, Isabella began to form what she would call the Force Majeure. To some they were seen as the Death Eaters rising again to avenge the loss of their Dark Lord, and she was content to allow this belief to flourish. It would keep the nosy off her tracks, as she had never been a Death Eater or anything close to it, and everyone knew it. They would function very different than the Death Eaters had. She would not be some Dark Lady, sitting on a throne of bones with a bloody huge snake and demanding the head of Harry Potter while her minions marched out in masks and shooting Dark Marks into the air. No, they would be subtle and clandestine. They would choose their marks carefully, would sow their propaganda skilfully without revealing their entire agenda. They would appeal to the disenfranchised without making grandiose promises. And, most importantly, they would all have no idea who their leader was. Each cell would report to a contact, who would report to another contact, and another, and so on and so forth until it came back to her. Only a few would ever know that she was the mastermind of the Force, and they would be forced to give Oaths to never reveal her secret.

So over the course of several years she and Blaise laid out the plans. They built their webs slowly and carefully, setting contingencies and preparing for every foreseeable outcome. Decisions were to be made with the aid of randomizing devices such as casting bones, so as to fool any potential Seers who might attempt to spy on the future. She alone would know what to look for, and her rare skill in Divination would be one of their greatest boons.

Finally the time came to launch their plans, and several carefully planned attacks were carried out. Their most important target was Hermione Granger, the Mudblood wife of the blood traitor Nott, and she was swiftly taken out. Others followed, and it became known that there was a force to champion the old ways once more, one that would restore their world to what it ought to be. Isabella was elated with the initial success, and has begun to plan several more operations. She has no illusions that this will be a swift victory, but she is a Witch of means, and she is more than prepared to do what it takes to make the wheel of fate turn as she sees fit.

DESCRIPTION:
Isabella is an enigma to most everyone who knows her, even the few beings that she allows to get close. At times she is cool and intensely practical, her emotions barely even registering in the face of her utterly ruthless devotion to logic and fact. At other times she is a creature of intense passions, emotions riding high like a storm that she gleefully throws herself in. Sometimes she exists in a dichotomy between these states, and sometimes she seems to transcend them both altogether and become something new. What sets off the changes in her personality remains a mystery, even to her.

No matter her mood, however, Isabella is always exceedingly cunning. She has made a way of life out of manipulating people and situations to best suit herself, and she is at any given moment plotting out how she might take advantage of the myriad events she sees happening around her. To Isabella, life is a grand tapestry that is meant to be altered and woven as one sees fit, but she knows that pulling on one thread will affect countless others all across the overall weaving. She spends much time considering the ramifications of an imagined action, and rarely does she commit anything impulsively, even when she is acting upon her passions and not her cold rationalism.

Her penchant for considering the world as she does is influenced in part by her gift of Sight. While not a true Seer or Sybil, Isabella does have the ability to divine patterns and how they are likely to play out in both the present and the future. She has studied with several old masters of the various applications of the Sight, teachers whose like are no longer known in schools like Hogwarts, and she has learned to turn her abilities to see what is happening in the world around her. As a result she has an uncanny knack for setting events into motion in just such a way that she always comes out ahead of the game.

The gifts of Sight and the talent of manipulation combined with a tumultuous childhood have left Isabella unable to trust almost anyone, however, and much of her talent is often turned towards how someone might betray her should she take them into her confidences. As a result she has few friends, though she is acquainted with almost all of Pureblood society in Britain, being a lady of considerable wealth and influence. Her dislike of trusting anyone is contrasted with her desire for human connection, which she lacked so much in her earlier life, and so she pursues sexual conquests as a huntress might pursue prey. The inability to let anyone get too close for her, however, leads her to abandon most of these relationships almost as quickly as they began, and this is grimly echoed in the legacy of deceased husbands in her wake.

Isabella no longer considers much of anything to be immoral, but rather to be inconvenient. She despises fanaticism like that displayed by the Death Eaters and the Order of the Phoenix, and believes that their battles over ethical issues and such are tedious and useless. One must function in society of course, and so the biggest hurdle in doing what one wants is to not get caught. Her talent in observing a situation from all angles has left her the expert in remaining perfectly innocent even when guilty, and if questioned under Veritaserum she could announce that she has never killed a person in her entire life. Setting up an accident to happen is not the same as murder, in her eyes, and getting rid of an inconvenience through death is simply practical, not immoral.

As the years since the war have gone by, she has become increasingly discontent with the loss of status Purebloods have suffered in Britain. On the mainland many Pureblood families retain their birthright, her own included, and she finds it intolerable that Britain, a land of such strong natural magic, is becoming dominated by Mudbloods who have no understanding of history and tradition. She has a very strong fear that, should things continue as they have, the Statute of Secrecy will be irrevocably breached and all hell will break loose when the Muggles descend upon them like a storm. It is in response to this fear that she has taken up the reins of power to lead the discontent to a new and better future that reflects the past of their ancestors. Her ambition is tapered by her distaste for fanaticism and her disdain of the Death Eaters’ methods, and her natural paranoia has made her rise to power a slow but steady one.

The only person in her life that she trusts implicitly is her son, Blaise, knowing that she has raised him to be utterly devoted to her in every way. Blaise is hers in every sense of the term, born from her body and of her spirit, raised by her and her alone, taught her values and her view of history and the world. She loves him more than she can really ever express, mostly because she knows that he will never abandon her.

Isabella is a master of deception, despite her wild mood swings, and can fool most anyone if she puts her mind to it. She has a mixed reputation in society, as many know of the shady circumstances surrounding the death of her husbands and her sexual dalliances, but she also is utterly charming and in control of most social situations. Those who meet her in person are torn between believing the stories of her dark side and admiring the capable, affluent woman they see before them. She has a keen mind and a good head for business, investing the various fortunes left by her husbands wisely and increasing her worth to the point that she is, perhaps, the wealthiest woman in Britain. She gives regularly to many charities and attends most important functions throughout the year, furthering her partial reputation as a lady of style and class.

Ultimately, she prefers to remain an mystery.
